HISTORY OF HINDOSTANIS IS NOW ACCESSIBLE TO GLOBAL AUDIENCE

Recently, an English-language publication on the history of Hindostanis has been released. History of Hindostanis 1873–2023: India-Suriname-The Netherlands by Chan Choenni offers a detailed description and analysis of the immigration of British Indian indentured laborers to Suriname, their development, integration, growth into the largest population group, and the subsequent mass emigration to the Netherlands in the period leading up to Suriname’s independence in 1975.

Chan Choenni is the author of six Dutch-language books on Hindostani immigration. These works are an important source of awareness regarding the historical and cultural legacy of the community. The history of the Hindostanis differs from that of the descendants of British Indian indentured laborers in the British colonies, about which various international publications have appeared. History of Hindostanis now makes the history and development of Hindostanis in Suriname and the Netherlands accessible to a broad international audience.

From May 30 to June 2, 2025, a Global Indian Diaspora Conference will take place in Trinidad as part of the events commemorating 180 years of Indian immigration (Indian Arrival Day). The first British Indian indentured laborers arrived there in 1845. The purpose of the conference is to examine the economic, socio-cultural, religious, and political progress of the Indian diaspora. It will also explore how the diaspora contributes to shaping a dynamic and impactful future. History of Hindostanis 1873-2023 aligns seamlessly with the objectives of this conference.

Ambassador Rajendre Khargi and Chan Choenni

The first copy was presented on April 30, 2025, to the Ambassador of Suriname, Rajendre Khargi, who also wrote the preface. He expressed his appreciation for the publication as a valuable tool to help bring the rich story of Surinamese Hindostanis to a global audience. Their heritage and contributions have been instrumental in the country’s success, and it is essential that their legacy is recognized and celebrated.
